top 10 Most Dissapointing Teams

10. 2017-18 Wisconsin Basketball: Expectations for this Badger were not super high coming into the season, as they began the year unranked. However, 4 straight sweet 16 appearances from 2014-17 led to the expectations being that another modest run was possible.

The Reality: The Badgers sputtered to a 14-17 record, a season that was seemed unfathomably bad to a young generation of Badger basketball fans like myself who knew nothing but success. It was the first time the Badgers did not make the NCAA Tournament since 1998, one of the longest streaks in college basketball.

9. 2011-12 Tampa Bay Lightning

The Expectation; The Lightning made a shocking run to the Eastern Conference Final in 2011 led by an unusual mix of veteran hall of famers (St Louis, Lecavalier) and the beginning of the careers of others (Stamkos, Hedman.) The team was expected to take a step forward with Stamkos and Hedman continuing their ascent.

The Reality: After leading the lightning in net through their playoff run the previous season, father time came for Goalie Dwayne Roloson fast and hard. The Lightning had no problem scoring goals (this was actually Stamkos famous 60 goal season), but they had an impossible time not giving them up. The Lightning finished the season dead last in the league in goals allowed, and stumbled their way to 82 points, a 21 point drop off from the previous season.

8. 2018 Green Bay Packers

The Expectation: After 8 straight playoff appeearnaces, Packers had a rough 2017 season thanks to an Aaron Rodgers injury that sidelined him for most of the season. With a healthy Rodgers back, 2018 was supposed to be a return to playoff form for the green and gold.

The reality: The team looked lifeless most of the season and pulled out a dreadful 1-7 road record, the lone win coming in OT against the pathetic jets. After a December loss at Lambeau to the 3-9 Cardinals Mike Mccarthy was fired.

7. 2014 Boston Red Sox

The Expectation: Coming off winning the World Series in 2013, the 2014 Red Sox were expected to at least compete to defend their title. They were not favorites to win again but everyone thought they would at least compete for a playoff spot.

Reality: The season started off pretty mediocre, a 20-19 record through 39 games was slightly disappointing but left plenty of time to right the ship. Then a 10 game losing streak all but doomed the season. The team sputtered to a 71-91 record, a 27 win drop off from the year before.

6. 2018 Wisconsin Badgers Football

The Expectation: coming off a top 10 finish in 2016 and an undefeated regular season in 2017, the vibes were higher than ever headed into 2018. The Badgers were preseason ranked number 4 and expected to possibly compete for a playoff berth.

The reality: Reality came crashing hard and fast as in week 3 the Badgers were upset by BYU as a 23.5 point favorite. It only got worse from there as a blowout loss at Michigan cemented their fate as a disappointment. The cherry on top was getting dismantled by Minnesota, their first loss to their biggest rival since 2003.

5. 2024-25 Orlando Magic

The expectation: After earning the five seed and pushing the Cavaliers to 7 games in the 2024 playoffs, the Magic were expected to take the next step.

The reality: the final outcome has yet to be written, but the vibes and high hopes built up over the past two years have all come crumbling down over the past 2.5 months. The team sits at 29-35 and in 9th place in the east. The team would need to finish 18-0 to match last years record.

4. 2012 Boston Red Sox

The expectation: The 2011 Red Sox were supposed to be one of the greatest teams of all time and through 135 games, they looked like it. Then they stumbled to a infamously bad 7-20 final stretch and missed the playoff by one game. 2012 was supoosed to be the rebound season, they were the same team on paper as last year, the redemption team

The reality: The Red Sox bumbled and stumbled their way to a 53-51 record through 104 games, waffling between showing flashes of the brilliant team they should be and looking shockingly inept. But they were still hanging around in the playoff race. Then the wheels completely fell off, they went 16-42 over the final 58 games and finished in last place for the first time in two decades.

3. 2022 Green Bay Packers

The expectation: Three straight 13 win seasons from 2019-2021 led to expectations for yet another strong regular season showing in 2022 and another potential run at getting Rodgers a second super bowl.

The reality: It started off that way. The Packers started 3-1 and led the Giants by 17 points at halftime looking like they were cruising to a 4th win. Then a shocking 2nd half choke cost them the Giants game, dropping them to 3-2 and it was all downhill from there. The Packers would go on to lose 7 out of 8 games and fall to 4-8. Despite the season turning into a disaster they actually rebounded and wont four straight to get to an 8-8 record. A win in their final game would have given them a playoff berth, but in the last game of the season they lost to the Lions at Lambeau, finishing 8-9 and out of the playoffs. The loss was the official end of the Aarond Rodgers in Green Bay.

2. 2008 Wisconsin Football

The expectation: Four straight 10 win seasons from 2004-2007 made Wisconsin tout itself as a consistent football school. 2008 was supposed to be the year that officially declared Wisconsin as a big ten powerhouse and be the emphatic exclamation point on an impressive run. The Badgers began the year ranked 10th, their highest preseason ranking ever, and a big road win against a top 25 team in Fresno st In week three only ballooned expectations and moved the Badgers up to number 7.

The reality: In week 4 the Badgers led Michigan 19-0 at halftime, looking like they were going to cruise their way to a 4-0 start. Then, a collapse began. The Badgers blew the 19 point lead and lost to Michigan. The following week they blew a 4th quarter lead to Ohio St and fell to 0-2 in the Big Ten, basically ending their goals for the season and it was barely October. It only got worse from there, next week they got railroaded 48-7 at home to Penn St, the worst home loss for the program in nearly twenty years. A 38-16 beatdown at Iowa put a capper on a miserable 4 game losing streak. The would mildly rebound to win 4 of their last five and finish with a 7-5 record, though they hardly looked impressive doing it. (it took a missed extra point in OT to defeat Cal Poly and a big 4th quarter comeback to defeat Minnesota) The capper to the miserable season was a 42-13 laugher loss in the Champs sports bowl to FSU, a game famous for the FSU punter being awared MVP of the game.

1.       2016-17 Tampa Bay Lightning

The expectation: After back to back appearances in the conference finals (one of which ended in the Stanley cup final), the Lightning were the odds on favorite to take the next step and win the Stanley cup this season.

The reality: The first quarter of the season went according to plan. The Bolts were humming along with a 13-7-1 record, on pace for 105 points. Then the injuries piled up and the bottom fell out in a way that seemed inconceivable with this roster. The lightning went 9-18-5 over the next 32 games, dropping them well out of the playoff race. The team got healthy and rounded back into shape and went 20-6-4 over the final 30 games, but ultimately finished 1 point out of the playoffs. In some ways its unfair to put this team #1. They started and ended great, it was just the middle stretch dominated by injuries that was awful. And it ended up being a blip season as they went right back to the conference finals in 2018.

Top 60 sports games of the decade: #57

September 21st 2019: Wisconsin pummels Michigan 35-14

College football is a funny sport. Only twelve games per year, and out of those twelve only 2 or 3 in a given season qualify as big games that really excite you. When an entire seasons identity comes down to 2 or 3 games it really emphasizes the importance of those games. When #14 Michigan came to town this past season with the Badgers ranked number 8 it was just the 4th time in the past twenty years that the Badgers played a home game between two top 15 teams. Michigan was a slight 1 point favorite so the game was seen as a toss up. The Badgers came out and knocked Michigan in the teeth, jumping out to a 28-0 lead by halftime and cruising in the second half en route to a 21 point win. With the win coming early in the season it officially established that this could be a great season for the Badgers, much needed after 2018's wildly disappointing season. In retrospect, this game ended up deciding the Big Ten representative in the Rose Bowl. If Michigan had won they would have been in Pasadena while the Badgers would have been resigned to facing Alabama in the Citrus Bowl. But thanks to one of the most resounding wins against a quality opponent in Badgers history, a special season was born.

Top 60 sports games of the decade: #58

January 19th 2019: Wisconsin knocks off #2 Undefeated Michigan, gets program back on track.

The 2017-18 season was bitterly disappointing for Wisconsin basketball, as they missed the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1998, ending one of the longest streaks in the country. Heading into the 2018-19 campaign fans were eager to set the program back on the right path. The Badgers entered the game against undefeated and #2 Michigan on January 19th with a 12-5 record, a noted improvement from the prior year, but still on the bubble for the tournament as some were still skeptical this team was actually better than last year. All questions were answered with a resounding double digit victory against #2 Michigan, placing Wisconsin firmly back in the tournament after a one year absence, and declaring that last years failure of a team was just a one year blip.

Top 60 Sports Games of the Decade: #59

August 1st 2013: Red Sox Vs Mariners

The entire 2013 Red Sox season was basically a fever dream. Six years later and it still stands as by far my favorite sports team of all time. After back to back disastrous seasons expectations were very low for the 2013 Red Sox. What ensued was a wild six month ride that included thrilling wins almost every night and a ragtag bunch of incredibly fun and likable players who were clearly enjoying every minute of it as much as the fans. The 2013 Red Sox will have six appearances on this list, moreso than any other single team.

First up is August 1st. Baseball fans will tell you when the calendar flips from July to August is when the season gets serious. On August 1st the Sox were deadlocked with the Tampa Bay Rays for first place in the division, so it looked like it could be a fun, tight, down to the wire race. On August 1st, the Sox were heading for certain defeat to start the month. Trailing 7-2 heading to the bottom of the ninth, a loss seemed inevitable. Then a hit, another hit, and the hits just kept coming until eventually the Sox finished off an incredible comeback to win 8-7.

Top 60 Sports Games of the Decade: #60

I thought it would be fun to look at my sports teams and count down the 60 greatest games of the decade for my teams. Teams include: Red Sox, Brewers, Lightning, Magic, Badgers football and Basketball, and Packers. Eligible games are from January 1st 2010 through December 31st 2019. Lets start with number 60.

April 7th 2012: Lightning Vs Jets: Stamkos Scores 60th goal of the season.

Funny enough, the 60th greatest sports game of the decade is the game where Steven Stamkos scored his 60th goal of the season. It was the final game of the season and Stamkos was sitting on 59 goals. With the Lightning out of the playoff picture the only drama was whether or not Stammer could net one more and put him at 60. He did so halfway through the second period becoming just the second player in the last 35 years to score 60 goals in a single season. This is the only game on the countdown that focuses more on an individual accomplishment, and also the only game where my team lost as the Lightning did end up losing this game, but it was too hard to leave out what is definitely the single greatest individual accomplishment from any of my teams players this decade.

Wisconsin may just run and away and hide from their division. I went 12-1 picking Big Ten games and 2-1 outside the Big Ten in week one. The biggest week one stories are mostly injuries as Jacob Eason and Deondre Francois both sustained them, as well as a monstrous 34 point comeback by UCLA over Texas A&M. Week two sees some monster games, can't wait.

NCAA Week One Picks

Here we go again! My favorite time of the year has rolled around for another year, I am always amazed how quickly it comes back around. I always think back to how depressed I feel in early November thinking how long it will be until this time of year comes back and how I just cant believe it came back so quickly. I've already been enjoying the horror movies, pumpkin spice things and earlier sunsets, and now football joins us once again. I can not believe this will be my Sixth year picking college football games on this blog, I cant believe I've been doing it this long! Anyway, I usually pick every Big Ten game and then the top three games outside of the Big Ten, here we go, footballs back, falls back, life is good!

NCAA Week 13 Picks

I went 7-0 in the Big ten and 2-1 outside of it, now standing at 45-10 and 23-12 respectively. Rivalry week in college football is here! The Saturday after thanksgiving is absolutely one of my favorite sports days of the year, right up there with The first day of the NCAA tournament, super bowl sunday, and baseball opening day. So many crazy things have happened on this week, and very often it affects the National Championship landscape. Some of my most memorable rivalry week moments include #1 Michigan Vs #2 Ohio State in the game of the Century in 2006, Auburns 108 yard field goal return Vs Bama in 2013, Chris Rix hail mary touchdown pass to beat Florida in 2003, and many more. This week is special, enjoy it. Heres the picks

Nebraska @ Iowa: Pick: Iowa
Purdue @ Indiana: Pick: Indiana
Illinois @ Northwestern: Pick: Northwestern
Rutgers @ Maryland: Pick: Maryland
Michigan @ Ohio St: Pick: Ohio St
Michigan St @ Penn St: Pick: Penn St
Minnesota @ Wisconsin: Pick: Wisconsin

Outside the Big Ten
Washington @ Washington St: Pick: Washington St
Auburn @ Alabama: Pick: Alabama
Florida @ Florida St: Pick: Florida St

Big Ten Standings
Its the last week of the season and half the league (7 teams) still have conference title hopes. In the east, Michigan wins their division with a win. If Ohio State beats Michigan, Penn State wins the division with a win. Ohio State wins the division with a win over Michigan AND a Penn State loss. In the west Wisconsin wins the division with a win. If Wisconsin loses, then Nebraska wins the division with a win. If Nebraska and Wisconsin both lose, there will be a four way tie at 6-3 for the division title between Nebraska, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Minnesota. In this scenario Wisconsin is still likely the division champ based on playoff ranking.

East
1. Ohio St: 7-1
2. Michigan: 7-1
3. Penn St: 7-1
4. Indiana: 3-5
5. Maryland: 2-6
6. Michigan St: 1-7
7. Rutgers: 0-8

West
1. Wisconsin: 6-2
2. Nebraska: 6-2
3. Minnesota: 5-3
4. Iowa: 5-3
5. Northwestern: 4-4
6. Illinois: 2-6
7. Purdue: 1-7

NCAA Week Twelve Picks

What chaos! The number two, three, and four teams in the country all lost, and the number nine team, Auburn, also got upset for their second loss officially eliminating them from the playoff discussion. I went 6-1 picking Big Ten games, now 38-10. I went 1-2 again outside the Big Ten, now 21-11.

Ohio St @ Michigan St: Pick: Ohio St
Iowa @ Illinois: Pick: Iowa
Maryland @ Nebraska: Pick: Nebraska
Wisconsin @ Purdue: Pick: Wisconsin
Indiana @ Michigan: Pick: Michigan
Northwestern @ Minnesota: Pick: Minnesota
Penn St @ Rutgers: Pick: Penn St

So what did all that chaos mean? funny enough, it actually meant more for the teams that didnt lose than the teams that did. About that whole Michigan/Ohio State game setting up to be a winner take all? Not the case anymore, as Penn State has suddenly blocked Ohio States path to a conference championship. As long as Penn St wins their final two games, and they will be massive favorites in both, it is impossible for Ohio St to win the division. But right now Ohio State is the number 2 team in the country, so the committee will have to decide if a team who didnt win their division is playoff worthy. Could this mean we get two teams from a conference? Its hard to imagine Penn St or Wisconsin being left out as a Conference champ, but that would require leaving the Pac-12 out in the cold. Theres also the whole Clemson-Louisville argument. Things just got reaallll interesting.

East
1. Ohio St: 6-1
2. Michigan: 6-1
3. Penn St: 6-1
4. Indiana: 3-4
5. Maryland: 2-5
6. Michigan St: 1-6
7. Rutgers: 0-7

West
1. Wisconsin: 5-2
2. Nebraska: 5-2
3. Minnesota: 4-3
4. Iowa: 4-3
5. Northwestern: 4-3
6. Illinois: 2-5
7. Purdue: 1-6

NCAA Week Eleven Picks

I went 6-1 picking Big Ten games this week to stay blistering hot, now 32-9 picking Big Ten games. I however went an icy 1-2 outside the Big Ten and am now 20-9 in that category. Four weeks left for the final four are picked.

Rutgers @ Michigan St: Pick: Michigan St
Penn St @ Indiana: Pick: Penn St
Northwestern @ Purdue: Pick: Northwestern
Illinois @ Wisconsin: Pick: Wisconsin
Ohio St @ Maryland: Pick: Ohio St
Minnesota @ Nebraska: Pick: Nebraska
Michigan @ Iowa: Pick: Michigan

Outside the Big Ten
West Virginia @ Texas: Pick: West Virginia
Auburn @ Georgia: Pick: Auburn
USC @ Washington: Pick: Washington

Big Ten Standings
Nebraskas loss to Ohio State means Wisconsin now is in the drivers seat for a division title. The Badgers control their destiny for that title, and will be double digit favorites in all their remaining games so they appear a safe bet. Ohio States win means we are still on the path for a winner take all Ohio St-Michigan showdown on thanksgiving weekend. However, Penn States hot run has them still alive, though there one conference loss is to Michigan which means it would take a massive upset somewhere in the next two weeks for Penn St to have a chance. Meanwhile defending conference champion Michigan States nightmare season continues, as they continue to somehow be winless in Conference Play and may be the single most disappointing team in the country at this point, right up with Notre Dame and Oregon.
